Dell probably does everything that you need a laptop to do. So, let's get into it and see if it actually lives up to that in Dell Inspiron 15 7000.
Let me share a brief idea for you about Dell Inspiron 15 7000...
We've got some basic cardboard that looks like it was recycled. And I think the power brick's over here. That's 130 watts, so powerful but not super-duper powerful. So here it is. The Inspiron 15 7000. This one right here has, I'd say, respectable ports but nothing amazing. So we have an SD card reader, USB Type A, combo headphone/microphone port. Around the other side, we have full-size HDMI, two USB Type As, and... Ooh, a Thunderbolt port! You normally don't expect to see that on something that's at this price. This is just over $1,000. So have that context when we go into this.
Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Review
Does it feel like an XPS 15? Of course, it doesn't, this thing is not made out of carbon fiber. But at the same time, it feels pretty damn good. I'm giving it a lot off lexing, twisting right now, and it's really not giving up. The screen isn't super-duper stiff, but also, who is doing this all day long? I'm not, and I don't believe it's touch, yeah. It's not a touch screen, so you don't really have to worry about that too, too much.
It looks like there's a very small amount of the thing that a lot of laptops do these days, where it lifts up the base as you open the screen, although it kind of looks like it's more so just a thing that happens as opposed to a feature. There's rubber, but it has such a small amount of lift that I can't really imagine that it's doing anything for the thermals or the keyboard position or anything. So we're looking at a Core i7-9750H, which is a six-core processor and pretty damn fast, I would have to say. It's not gonna, you know...
It's not an eight-core processor, it's not a 9980HK or whatever, but I imagine for the vast majority of people if you want to, well, surfing the web, obviously, it's gonna be good enough, but probably.
Is Dell Inspiron 15 7000 probably good for light video editing?
Actually, kind of intense video editing, really? What would not be fine is that only has 8 gigabytes of RAM, and we can fix that later. We'll get there. For a disk, we get a 512-gigabyte NVMe SSD, which is actually fairly nice to have at this price point. You'd normally expect to see like 256 and maybe a hard drive, something like that. We've got Intel Wireless, which probably means it's pretty good.
I believe it's 2x2. I don't think we get Wi-Fi 6, but it's probably more than fast enough for basically everyone. And finally, the most disappointing part of the whole thing, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050.
It's 1050, come on guys. I would've been way happier if they had included 1650. I think 1650 is 40,50% faster than in 1050? That's the kind of performance that can actually deliver a good gaming experience, whereas for this right here you're going to be like, well, I don't know,
I have a"Stardew Valley" background on here, so you're going to e playing "Stardew Valley" or something like that, and not super-duper well. 1050. Nyeh, it's just kind of disappointing. But at the same time, this isn't a gaming laptop. You're not going to be using it to game all day, every day.
There's a calculator button. Any time that you need to calculate something, you're just one button away. This is my new favorite feature. Oh yeah, clear, get right back in, plus, minus. Oh, that works nicely. I'm glad they thought of that, and I'm also really glad it has a number pad. I feel like way too many laptops these days just completely give up on it, even though they might have space. I personally use it all the time. I dunno, my background is in engineering, so I think of using Excel and MATLAB all day as kind of like the main use case. Other people might not be doing that, but even so, even just the enter key here? I really like hitting it with my thumb. :)
I'd say everything that I've felt so far just kind of works. Like the trackpad is not glass-topped and the click doesn't feel great, but at the same time it's pretty large, given, and I really can't complain about how it feels. It's just a trackpad.
As for the keyboard... Notepad. Just kind of feeling the keys. It feels like the stability is pretty good. If you really press down, there is definite movement, although when I'm actually typing I would say it is totally acceptable.
Let's get back to the whole problem that I was talking about before, where this thing only has eight gigabytes of RAM. Hopefully, these are all the same type of screw. Yeah, definitely guitar pick required to get this one apart.
So close, there's a jerk. So I guess now, while we are in here, it's a 56 watt-hour battery, which is pretty good in this price range. Actually, that's exactly what you get in this price range, basically. We have eight gigs of 2066 memory in here. Right here we've got 16 gigs of DDR4 2066 memory from Timetec. They're just cheap RAM that you can get on Amazon, basically, that's kind of the whole selling point.
It's probably the exact same one that was in the Dell system that we got from Best Buy, and it probably is DRAM-less but uses the memory on the computer, like it talks to it. Could you, yes, you can definitely upgrade this to full size. you can just move the little mounting bracket back here, and the heat sink travels the whole length, so you won't have any issues if you want to put in a full-sized M.2 drive in here. Yep, there we go.
It looks like we're gonna get away with just putting in only one of these sticks of RAM. Which means that, really, six cores? Well, in 1050. But, you know, six cores. You're gonna be able to do quite a bit with this thing once you have enough RAM in there. For the same price, you can get a gaming laptop that's more powerful, if that's what you're going for. This is probably powerful enough for almost everyone unless all that you plan on doing is gaming. I'd say that the main advantage of going with the Inspiron over, say, a G5 or something like that... Is that it just doesn't look stupid.
